Spiritual Reflection – ‘Called to be Prophets and Disciples’
On Thursday August 29, the Church celebrates the passion of St John the Baptist. We know from Scripture that he was the cousin of Jesus, the son of Elizabeth, and also the nephew of Mary. King Herod knew that John was a holy man, and he liked to hear John’s words. He knew that he had to get control of him because of the crowds he was starting to build. He was afraid to kill him, so instead he had him imprisoned. Herod also feared that John’s influence and power over the people might cause a rebellion.
As we reflect on John, we can ponder what the parallels are in our own lives.
He prepared the way for Jesus.
How do I prepare myself, my heart, to welcome Jesus’ way of life as my way of life?
He focused on his relationship with God. The God we experience is the God we live.
How do I remain in relationship with God? What practices sustain this relationship?
He was a prophet, speaking God’s truth in the world with great courage in calling others to a true change of heart.
When and where am I invited to speak God’s truth courageously, even when it is not popular or graciously received?
Each of us has a calling to which we must listen. No one will ever repeat the mission of John, and yet all of us are called to that very mission.
It is the role of the Christian to witness to Jesus. Whatever our position in this world, we are called to be disciples of Christ.
By our words and deeds, others should realise that we live in the joy of knowing that Jesus is God who invites us to fully live our lives.
