GARDEN UPDATE
Living Classroom Report - Tuesday Week 7 -Tiarna & Kora
Hello Parents and Teachers,
Today (Tuesday Week 7) Year 4 went in to the permaculture garden for the whole day! In the garden Year 4 did weeding, chop and drop and stink bug termination. Mila, Eleni, Ari, Delilah and Sofia, did the chop and drop near the southern fence. They were cutting the bana grass. Eleni, Israel and Tirana did chop and drop as well, but chopped the vetiver grass and made a donut shape around the Mulberry tree. Chopping and dropping is great because it retains water in the soil and feeds the trees with important nutrients. Imogen, Marco and Mr Mattas terminated the stink bugs by sucking them up with a wet and dry vacuum cleaner! They did that so that the citrus trees could still grow fruit, because the stink bugs take all the sugar out of the citrus trees then they can’t grow fruit. Rose, Kora, Bede, Jack, Nikhil, Dean and Simona all did weeding for the whole day! Lucas, Jake and Levi M worked near the kitchen and cleared out the sweet potato vines and put it all in a wheelbarrow, then emptied it all into the big compost pile near the seating circle. We will use all of the weeds to make a huge ‘hot compost’.
We had a great day!
