Dear Parents
Happy Catholic Schools Week! The theme for the week is Faith in the Future.
We pray for the Catholic school communities in the Diocese of Wollongong: that they will continue to be places of hope, integrity, justice and compassion bringing the love of Christ to the students in their care through their service, compassion relationships and commitment to excellence so that all students may experience growth in faith and improvement in learning .
Australia’s first Catholic school was opened in October 1820 by George Morley, a Roman Catholic teacher who was paid the handsome sum of one penny per student (“...provisioned from the Government Stores”, according to an account by Catholic educator Br Kelvin Canavan).
The school, which Catholic historians believe was in Hunter Street, Parramatta, taught 31 students – seven of whom were Protestants. By 1833, there were 10 Catholic schools in the colony
There are now more than 1750 Catholic schools nationally, educating some 765,000 students.
This is one in five Australian students – a remarkable achievement considering that until the early 1970s, Catholic schools were funded almost entirely by parents and their local parish communities.
Medical Advice
If your child is away from school it is important to let the school know as soon as possible with a specific reason, e.g. what type of illness they have, If you are filling in a note on the Compass app, please add an explanation in the details/comments box .
Do not enter into Compass if they are going to be late or leave early, that needs to be done from the school end.
It is really important to keep your child at home if they are unwell, this will help with the spread of illness. In the current COVID 19 climate ,if you child displays cold/flu symptoms, your child will be sent home and you will need to get a medical clearance for your child to return to school
If your child has a Covid test, please notify the school when they have the test and as soon as you get your results please forward these on to the school.
NAPLAN
Students in Years 3 & 5 will participate in NAPLAN this year. The assessment period begins Monday 10 May with a preparation day and concludes on Friday 29 May. This period includes the catch up test period if needed.
NAPLAN includes assessments in Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. The Good Samaritan NAPLAN assessment schedule will be communicated closer to the start date.
Consent Form for Photographing
There are still some families who haven’t sent their signed paper work to allow us to photograph students. It is especially difficult in weeks such as this one where the whole school is involved in activities that we would like to share with you. Because of COVID this is a means by which we can celebrate children’s learning.
The consent form for use of student's image and/or work is required to be completed for each student every year. If you have not completed and submitted one for your child for 2021 please complete the form (which was sent home with your child today) and return it to the school office as soon as possible. Students who have not had a form completed will be marked as DO NOT PHOTOGRAPH (which will include official school photos) until a form is received.

February Mission Star!
A big congratulations to the February Mission Star Award recipient, our wonderful Year 3 student Alicia Morgan! Alicia is a more than deserving recipient of the award, receiving 6 nominations from the St Patrick’s community. Thanks for being a Mission Star everyday Alicia! We are very proud of your efforts.
The Mission Star Award is especially unique as nominations come from all members of the school community, not just teachers. Remember, if you would like to nominate a student, staff member, parent or carer you can do so by writing a nomination in the Mission Star nomination box in the front office.
Project Compassion – Ice Cream Creations Fundraiser!
The Mini Vinnies members, along with Miss Doro, Mr Hoctor and myself were very busy running the Project Compassion – Ice Cream Creations Fundraiser on Monday of this week. The vast majority of the students purchased an ice cream, and all profits raised go to helping people living in poverty in countries such as Tanzania, the Solomon Islands, Bangladesh and Indonesia. We raised a total of $244.30. It was a very hot day so an ice cream went down a treat!
Many thanks for your generosity! Remember, the theme for Project Compassion 2021 is BE MORE; and this Lent, we are aspiring not to have more, but to be more!

We wish the best of luck to Tahlia Spinelli, Ella Sammut, Emma Usljebrka and Madeleine Mineeff who have qualified to try out for a Wollongong Diocese Girls Football team. We also wish Maya Rizovska the best of luck who will be trialling for a place in the Wollongong Diocese Netball team. These tryouts will be held March 5.
Congratulations
Congratulations Taylah Curtis. Taylah after representing Wollongong Diocese has now been selected to play in the MacKillop Basketball Team to attend the NSW PSSA Girls Basketball Championships in June in Sydney.
We also acknowledge Liana Meta’s excellent efforts at the MacKillop tennis trials.
South Coast Swimming Carnival
17 delightful students represented our school at the South Coast Swimming Carnival on March 2 at the Corrimal Pool. They all happily supported and cheered for one another as they did their best, focusing on what they could achieve and not on what they could not. Congratulations to all for their excellent efforts and cooperation.
The stand out performances came from the Junior and Senior Girls Relay Teams. The juniors (Paige, Sophia, Makayla & Delilah) won their heat and came third overall. While the seniors (Taylah, Ella M, Maya and Charli) who also won their heat, came 4th overall. Both of these relay teams qualify for the Wollongong Diocese trials March 8. Congratulations to these girls and best of luck at the next level.
Pastoral Support Update.
As you would be aware the school community is raising money for Project Compassion during this season of Lent. The Card making group has decided that it would be a great idea to sell some of the cards that they have made to raise some more money which will be donated to Project Compassion.
During Week 10 on Tuesday, the Cardmaking group will sell the cards for $1 each. So far over 60 cards have been created and over the coming weeks some more will be made. Some of the latest cards are pictured below.
Don’t forget to sign up for the Season’s for Growth program. This program helps students to discover that change is a part of life and provides them with tools to manage their feelings, to problem solve and to communicate. Changes include but are not limited to a death in the family, divorce or separation, family members working away and coming to a new school. At this point I am looking for expressions of interest from parents. If we have enough numbers, I will let you know when we will be running the program this year. Please do not hesitate to email me catrionan@catholiccare.dow.org.au with any questions that you may have or ring me at school on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Thanks,
Mrs Catriona Neilsen (Pastoral Support Worker)
